A veterinary examination, possibly followed by a ultrasound scan, will be necessary to make a definitive diagnosis. A pyometra is an emergency for which the treatment is complete ovario-hysterectomy: basically, your dog needs to be neutered as early as possible. | I don't know about Illinois, but WI just recently passed a new law stating that any kennel that sells more that 25 dogs/year has to be licensed and inspected. I would imagine some don't feel like dealing with this so they are getting rid of dogs, bitches included. Wouldn't be far fetched to think some of them would end up in shelters and rescues in IL. |

Most dogs (males) would be sexually active from around 6 months old. At 5 years old the b*tch is too old to breed if she has never had a litter before.
