Is AIDS responsible for the lack of older gay men? Did it wipe out an entire generation of gays?
Watched a video about HIV / AIDS and this occurred to me. Of course, social stigmas and old views about homosexuality have stopped many older men from coming out, but was an entire generation of gays killed by AIDS? Why do I see plenty of younger gays, but few over the age of 40?

First of all, no, it did not wipe out an entire generation.

There are lots of gay men. You probably don't frequent the same venues as them, and if you did, I doubt you'd be able to tell which men are gay. They aren't exactly walking around in feathered boas with glittery hot pants at 70 years old, and strangely, many people seem to expect this.

Also, the elderly in general, often feel intimidated and fear for their safety in many public areas. Likewise, many Queer people act like friends in public, because they don't have the strength to take on people who might attack them or try to start a fight. So, if you were an arthritic 70yr old man with a partner, would you take a stroll down to the local coffee shop hand in hand, risking the abuse that could come your way and knowing that you wouldn't be able to defend yourself or your partner?
Probably not....unless you live in certain areas, and if you did go to these areas, you'd see lots of elderly Queer couples. It's really sweet seeing old couples together actually.

It depends on each individual. For example, I think Ian McKellen is a great older gay man who is a fantastic role model. Michael Jackson on the other hand is a super-crappy role model. I don't think that sexual orientation should have any bearing on weather any particular person is a good role model. That should be decided by seeing what that person has done with his life.

I'm in a gay relationship with a man 30 yrs older than me.

I've noticed a lot of young/old relationships between all sexes. I don't think they're being used. I think sometimes the younger guys like older men for experience, or that older men know how to treat people better. The older guys like the younger guys because they feel "fatherly" or they want to take care of someone.

This is just my opinion of course, but I don't think it's to steal the life force.

I think the observation is true, but not just for gays, for everyone. Most people have a problem with getting old, and they shun those who remind them of what they'll eventually become. This could be extra true for the gay community, where it appears so much emphasis is placed on youth and looks.
